The GIME-Z is an FPGA-based replacement for the original GIME (Graphics Interrupt Memory Enhancer) chip in the TRS-80 Color Computer 3 (CoCo3). Designed to enhance the system, it provides improved performance, including faster turbo clock speeds (up to 3.2X) and better video signal stability compared to the original 1986/1987 chips. The MMU (Memory Management Unit) increases the original 512 kB memory limits to 2 MB.

  • Purpose: It acts as a modern, reliable, and faster replacement for the stock GIME chip, which is responsible for memory management, graphics, and interrupts in the CoCo3.
  • Performance: It enables faster clock modes, specifically POKE 65497,0 for 2X (FAST) and POKE 65497,&H5A for 3.2X (TURBO).
  • Video Improvement: It resolves issues found in original 1986 GIME chips regarding HSYNC pulses and RGB output, allowing for better compatibility with modern display converters.
  • Installation: It is installed directly onto the motherboard's PLCC socket, often requiring careful handling of the underlying hardware.
